Pyrolytic carbon (pyrocarbon) is gaining widespread acceptance for use in orthopedics due to its excellent biocompatibility, extremely low friction coefficient, and high resistance to wear. Pyrocarbon also has a bioelastic modulus quite similar to bone, making it an ideal material for orthopedic implants.

This site is intended for physician education about pyrocarbon implants for extremities orthopedic applications. It was developed and is maintained by Tornier, a provider of pyrocarbon orthopedic implants.
